It Takes A Village

“It takes a village to raise a child” – an African Proverb

Lately I’ve had several conversations with various individuals at different stages in life. Funnily, in each situation the phrase “it takes a village” popped up. No matter your stage of life the village surrounding your day in and day out of life does matter.

The value and importance of that village impacts so many areas of life. As a parent, at times you become the unwise gnat in the ear of your kids. You can share thoughts or advice with your children and then they will hear the exact same words come from the mouth of another adult they respect and follow through on shared advice. Gratitude to the adults in our kids lives helping them to live well (especially when they are choosing to stonewall words from their parents.)

So if I flip myself to the position of child, I ask the question, “When do I stonewall words from my Heavenly Father?” The answer: Far more often than I am proud to say. In His loving kindness, I know the gift of a good village surrounds me. Surrounding myself and engaging with my village corrects my stubbornness and encourages me to seek Jesus and His direction for my life.

Team Tuesday 1.4.22 Scripture

Hebrews 10:24-25 NRSV Bible Gateway

24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Take a look at your village. When you fall into your human stubbornness, does your village surround you well and redirect you back to Jesus? Do you need a bigger village to help with this? The doors and hearts of Gravel Hill are open. You are welcome to be a part of our village focusing our eyes on Jesus.

Blessings!

Communicate and Act

“If we don’t communicate, we certainly can’t get much done and if we don’t communicate authentically, what we get done is less effective.” — Michele Jennae

Each day, Someone waits for us to meet Him. Ready to listen and meet us where we are, He holds space for us to join Him. Do I make time to come into this sacred space and time? Honestly, not every single day. And my life feels the impact of this.

Spending time in scripture, devotions, prayer, and recognition of God and His creation are forms of communication. As His child and creation, I can safely come to Him with the knowledge that He know my heart, my struggles, and my joys. Part of the beauty of communication is fully expressing each of these parts of me with God. These expressions are a voice that when shared become fuel for action.

Team Tuesday 12.28.21 Scripture

Matthew 11:28 NRSV Bible Gateway

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

In today’s scripture, we see the action called for is rest. After sharing and releasing the lonely grip of solely possessing emotions or knowledge, the gift of release allows for us to rest, renew, and regain a different perspective towards the situation we were facing.

As you face emotions, feelings, and surprises that may be uncomfortable, take them and share them in communication with God. Release your lone hold on your experience. Allow God to hold the heaviness so you can rest. Rest and be renewed. The ultimate teammate has your back. Seek Him!

Blessings!

Praising

“When you focus on how wonderful God is and all the great things He’s done… is doing… and even will do in your life, your natural response will be praise, adoration and awe. Don’t let yourself ever get used to it… stay amazed!”

Joyce Meyer

As we creep closer to the day recognized as the day the greatest gift given to mankind occurred, we also visit the story of the days leading up to this grand moment. As you think on the quote above and the story share with us in Luke 2, may you see your invitation to join in the praise of God. In doing so you will be joining an army of praise.

Team Tuesday 12.21.21 Scripture

Luke 2 NRSV Bible Gateway

In verse 13, the angel who spoke to the shepherds about the good news has an army (a multitude of the heavenly host) join in praise saying:

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

As you go through your day, I challenge you to lift praises to God. When you lift praises, you invite peace to reign down in your life. Today I join my voice with yours in praise: “Glory to God in the highest heaven!”

Blessings!

Vulnerability

“Remember, teamwork begins by building trust. And the only way to do that is to overcome our need for invulnerability.” –Patrick Lencioni

As we grow into adulthood, many of us develop a shell of invulnerability as a means to protect us from getting hurt in life. Experience teaches us vulnerability will leave us open to pain and hurt. So to protect ourselves we create a shell of invulnerability: it keeps us from getting hurt and suffering heartache and pain. But on the flip side, it also keeps us from having deep meaningful relationships full of love, joy, and trust.

Have you ever looked at a child captured by the wonder they find in the world around them? Their vulnerability opens the doors of love, joy, trust, and wonder. Do you remember having that same wonder yourself? If it has been a while since you have experienced it, take some time in the scriptures with God. He offers the ultimate relationship where you can safely be vulnerable. He is love. When you trust Him with your whole heart and life (you know the vulnerable side of yourself), He will act. Wonder will creep back into your life as your eyes open to the glory of God around you.

Team Tuesday 12.14.21 Scripture

Proverbs 3:5-6 NRSV Bible Gateway

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

May you be blessed through the gift of vulnerability!

Team God

Team God has its leader in Jesus Christ. Those whom profess Jesus as their Lord and Savior are team members. Each person on team God holds more titles including: Child of God and Heir to the Kingdom.

Folks on team God realize that we live in this world, but that our approach to being is not of this world. Our being is guided by Jesus. He is our Shepherd. When we turn to Him in scripture and prayer, He leads us.

During this season of advent, share the news of our salvation. In doing so, you follow the Great Commission given to all members of team God.

Team Tuesday 12.7.21 Scripture

Matthew 28:19-20 NRSV Bible Gateway

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”[a]

Share the Good News this advent season. You never know – God may use you to help grow His team!
