Serving Love

The month of December fills with spirited activities of preparation and celebration. At this phase of life for our family, meals tend to occur in shifts. To provide a delicious hot meal can present a challenge. Tonight, I plan to tackle that challenge with the help of my crock pot.

Taco Ring/Homemade Hot Pocket is a family favorite meal. It consists of taco meat – we usually use browned burger seasoned with taco flavoring (but you can swap in chicken, turkey, or pork), cheese, and crescent rolls. Once the meat has been browned and seasoned, I add in 1 cup of shredded cheese along with 2 tablespoons of water for every pound of meat. While the meat is browning, I open 2 cans of crescent rolls.

Putting It Together

If the hot pockets have been requested, I leave the rectangles of together and press/pinch the dotted seams together to seal them. This yields 4 homemade hot pockets once filled and topped with another dough rectangle.

For the ring, all the triangles are separated and arranged in an overlapping circle with the right angle and short ends (the longer pointed end lays away from the center of the circle). Press the overlap together to seal the base. Then spoon the meat & cheese mixture onto the base section. Take the long pointed section and wrap it over the meat, tucking the tip under the dough on the opposite side to seal while baking. The ring yields 8 servings. These bakes at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

So tonight I will use my crock pot to keep the meat warm and each shift of dinner, 4 pm & 8:30 pm, will enjoy a warm bread filled with delicious meat from the oven. Using the tools available, I meet the needs of hunger in our home with a hot meal and a healthy dose of love.

Thankful Thursday 12-2-2021

To Come

Thankful Thursday falls as day 5 in the advent season this year. Every year when Advent comes around, I think back to my high school Latin class (thank you Mrs. Campbell for your love of the language: derivatives, syntax, means, and more and sharing it with all your students!) and the translate the meaning of Advent to the English meaning: to come.

As Christians, we use this time to prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Our salvation come to earth. Salvation waits for you to accept it. It can not be earned. A gift freely given to you and to me.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast.

If you have not received the gift of salvation by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, He awaits your invitation for Him to come. Come into your heart and your life. When you make this choice, your life and the way you see it will begin to look different. The Bible shares stories of lives changes by the people inviting Jesus to come into their lives. Yours can be too.

I thank God for the gift of my salvation and invite Him daily to come into my heart and my life to guide and direct me. To use me as an instrument for His glory to shine! He uses these humble offerings to come to others in the world who have yet to hear the Good News and glad tidings.

Your gift awaits!

Bigger Than Ours Alone

“Each day during Advent (starting November 28), we will post a word of the day. We invite you to pause, reflect and post a response on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. Your post should illustrate how you perceive each word of the day. No explanation needed.
You can share a photo, poem or even a simple thought. Tag it: #rethinkchurch” -rethinkchurch

If you follow Rethink Church on Instagram (@rethinkchurch), Twitter (@umrethinkchurch), or Facebook (@umcrethinkchurch), you have read the invitation above they shared last week. And our youth group has seen this invite as well. So the invitation is being extended you now also.

Help spread the the excitement of this advent season by sharing your perspective of the focus word of the day with your response. Your response is a beacon of light and good news of God at work in your life. We are not alone in celebrating advent. The offering of your response allows God’s glory to shine to others.

Share your response so God’s glory shines all the brighter!

Sweet Tradition

What a delicious couple of days! Thanks to my sister we enjoy a tradition of eating homemade pumpkin roll. One of my sons wanted to make sure it was not left off the menu this year and joined me in the kitchen. Together we made a double batch of pumpkin roll to have one to share and one to enjoy in our home. Look to the end of this post for the recipe. Our efforts were sister approved and thoroughly enjoyed by many. However, as I write this I do believe the final piece is being consumed…

Just as we kept with tradition of creating something sweet to enjoy in our stomachs, we also shared words of gratitude for the gifts in our lives. These words acknowledged the goodness in our lives and doing so brought sweetness to our bodies, minds, and souls. Proverbs shares this point.

If you would like to make pumpkin roll in your home, here is the recipe as shared by my sister.

Pumpkin Roll Ingredients:

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

1 tsp baking soda

2/3 cup pumpkin

3/4 cup flour

2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

Mix together and bake at 350 degrees in a greased and floured jellyroll pan for 12-15 minutes. Loosen edges with a knife. Turn out onto a dish towel sprinkled with powdered sugar. Roll up in towel. Leave rolled for 30 minutes. Mix the icing ingredients* together and spread on unrolled cake, then reroll. Chill.

*Icing Ingredients: 1 (8 oz.) package of cream cheese, 4 Tablespoons butter, 1 cup powdered sugar (10X sugar), 1 teaspoon vanilla

**********

I foresee the pumpkin roll being made again in the near future for our family and others to enjoy (maybe even as some Christmas gifts??). And we will definitely share pleasant words along with it. May you and your loved ones feast on both pleasant words and sweet treats!

Thankful Thursday 11-25-2021

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thankful Thursday brings us all together to focus on Thanksgiving. As we gather together to give thanks like the pilgrims did so many years ago, we celebrate the blessings from God, bonds of family and community, and the bounty of food. On this day of gathering and reflecting, take a moment (maybe while gathered around the table) to share where you see the cornucopia of the fruit of the Spirit in your life.

The Fruit of the Spirit

22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. – Galatians 5:22-23

Where in your life do you see: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Where you find these, you find God. Give thanks for these intangible gifts. Enjoy your day (as peaceful or as raucous as it may be) with a thankful heart!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Listening

“Listening is the oldest and perhaps the most powerful tool of healing. It is often through the quality of our listening and not the wisdom of our words that we are able to effect the most profound changes in the people around us. When we listen, we offer with our attention an opportunity for wholeness. Our listening creates sanctuary for the homeless parts within the other person. That which has been denied, unloved, devalued by themselves and others. That which is hidden.” ~ Rachel Naomi Remen

As we engage with others over the coming weeks, may you offer those in your presence with whom you have healthy boundaries the gift of your listening with attention to them. Open the floor for their voice to be heard. This means truly absorbing their words and thoughts. Only once they have completed them do you respond.

19 You must understand this, my beloved:[a] let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger;

May we each follow the commands of the verse above. May we be a sanctuary for sharing. Listening is an act of love.

Love well!

Take Pleasure In All Their Toil

Wow! What a weekend here at Gravel Hill. On Saturday our spaces were filled. Treats, goodies, and people filled Gravel Hill as shopping commenced. Glad hearts and good spirits filled the air. Initial counts from the Christmas Market shared on Sunday came to $9,267. This money will go towards support four local charities.

The spirit of joy continued in the morning. The family of God grew. Several baptisms occurred welcoming new members to the body of believers. So excited for our new brothers and sisters in Christ!

As we round the corner towards Thanksgiving week, preparations have begun. The day of gathering, feasting, and fellowshipping may be large, noisy, and boisterous or small, quiet, and contemplative. Each scenario affords opportunity to create wonderful memories.

While there is plenty of toil between this past weekend and in preparation for Thanksgiving, keep doing so. In such, you live the scriptures. You are gifted by God with the ability to get to do exactly what it is that you do! Celebrate that fact.

13 moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil.

As you celebrate this Thanksgiving, you may want to add this delightful dish to your table: Deb’s Kale Salad with Apple, Cranberries, and Pecans. It was on our table last year and was a nice lighter, brighter (& delicious!) dish that complimented all the other foods.

Celebrating all the food, drink, and toil!

Reminders

Thankful Thursday muses upon the gratitude for the perfectly placed reminder from God. Sometimes one word read or said makes me pause and ponder. Whether it is through the tone shared or the moment in which it is experienced, it hits differently. Enough to make me stop, think on it, and look at it through another perspective.

At other times, the energy of love around me swells and catches me. It may draw me to a point over overwhelm where I physically have to catch my breath. These highs are matched with the not so high moments too. I feel God’s warm embrace when I still with His Word letting it wash over me and calm me.

No matter where we are, God is there. His love awaits. Ready to wrap us up, help us heal, and fill us more fully than we can imagine.

One place you can find a reminder of God in action this Saturday is at the Christmas Market at Gravel Hill. Many people come together to make this wonderful event happen and we invite you to be one of them. A warm buzz hums through the building as you experience each of the different areas offered. From handcrafted items to read- to-go gifts to delicious treats, you can’t miss on finding the perfect “something special” with which to bless a loved one in your life.
