Loving Correction

Thankful Thursday muses over the freedom gained from owning your mistakes. When we watch children, we often see the blame game occur when something goes wrong. When taught to admit their mistake, receive correction, and modify their future behavior, the next best step they take will lead to better future choices. And if they do not receive the correction toward self reflecting, admitting, and owning their mistake; struggles continue further along in life most often in their relationships with themselves, God, and others.

Exercising the behaviors and actions needed to admit your own mistakes is never easy. But in our walk with the Lord, we need to repent of our mistakes. Turn away from them and turn to the Lord. The first step is being honest with ourselves and God. The second is recognize the mistake by naming it. Then, we own our mistaken action and receive the consequence of it.

Ephesians 1:7 promises, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” That forgiveness comes our way once we have owned our mistakes or trespasses and repented of them. We can take all these actions in confidence knowing that the God’s love guides us toward His glory through His grace if we choose to listen and act upon it.

As brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, we are called to lovingly support each other in leading our lives towards Christ including with this challenging and all-too-human recognition and admission process. The parent child relationship modelled after God’s relationship with each of us, offers the loving atomsphere within which this process takes place. When it transitions to sharing with our brothers and sisters in Christ, the challenge becomes sharing prayful observations and suggestions in love and not in accusatory tones.

Before approaching another brother or sister in Christ, approach God in prayer. Gain His guidance and direction for the conversation. Ask His blessing on your shared words and both of your hearts through the process of sharing. With God as the forward focus, this challenging process of loving correction can be made with support and encouragement to grow into taking the next best step toward better future actions. Thank you God for the freedom we gain in always coming to you!

Blessings!
