Slowness and Stillness

Thankful Thursday found walkers in our neighborhood bundled up on this chilly morning. In the cool morning air, hellos are shared in the passing of other walkers. The geese flying overhead squawk their noise of encouragement, but in the moments between these noises, the silence and stillness sits waiting.

Those who move at the pace of their own bodily ability have the chance to see, hear, smell, and feel the atmosphere around them. When utilizing the human advancements in movement, we reduce or remove the ability to experience being in the nature that surrounds us. When on a walk, the beauty of a flower, the shape of a cloud, or a landscope on the horizon, can beckon us to a stop. Stilling our movement, to fully take in the arresting sight, draws us closer to the heart of God. Our stillness allows us to receive the gift of beauty sent from God. In doing so, you follow the command of scripture: Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10)

As we enter the month of November, I encourage us to take a cue from nature throughout our days. Slow the speed at which you move through your day to one of stillness. Take a look around. Notice the gifts of taking a breath, being winked at by a twinkle of light breaking through, hearing the song of the birds, and more. Praise God for these gifts and your ability to notice them! For through God, they do renew and restore our souls.

Blessings!
