In the Business of Miracles

It is not unusual to hear people questioning God in our day and age. Does God still care? Is He still moving in our world? Is He doing the great things in this time and place in the same way He did in Biblical times? I’m sure that this is an age-old question that many people over the centuries have asked as they have looked on to a world that seems to be in disarray.

As Christians, we know that God is still working and moving in this world! Even more personally, we can feel His movement in each and every one of our lives! I have seen it in my own life, and I have seen and heard it from other believers who have been astounded by God’s work in their lives.

Experiencing Miracles

In my own life, I have recently experienced some circumstances that have felt bleak, as if there was no way they could improve. Then suddenly, the problems cleared up right before my eyes. God was able to work in each person’s life who was involved, and He showed an end result which worked for the betterment of all.  I can’t say that it was purely a coincidence because I know it wasn’t, it was the movement of the Holy Spirit at work making all things come together.

I have seen God work corporately in our congregation at Gravel Hill. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to stand up front and lead worship weekly. I see firsthand the power of the Holy Spirit as it washes over people in the pews. Sometimes, I can see visible tears in our worshipers’ eyes.  Others have their hands raised, clapping, dancing and worshiping with abandon. Others who are moved to complete stillness, heads lowered in the presence of God. It is truly a beautiful experience each and every week!

Expecting Miracles

The big key to seeing God and His miracles every day is to be so in tune with the Holy Spirit that you are waiting for Him to move in a great way, or even in a small way. You should be expecting the movement of God to appear in your life.

I hope that you will take some time going forward to relax and reflect on the miraculous things which God has done in your life. I also pray that you will start taking some time to expect the movement of God in your life. When you experience it, I pray also that you will share it with others so they know that God is still in the business of miracles!

Thankful Thursday 6-10-2021

The Unexpected

Thankful Thursday greeted our home with an unexcepted knock at the door. Upon opening it, a smiling man from the utility company said hello and informed me his crew was there to replace the telephone pole on our property. He then asked for permission to access the work area by way of our front yard. This added excitement shifted today’s plans slightly, but I am grateful for the work done to sure up the connection with our utilities.

While doing the tasks listed on my calendar, I remember to remain connected to God. On days like today with His guidance, I shift direction, reprioritize tasks, and adapt to the new element in my day. I have found the key to making these shifts easier: gratitude. I thank the Lord for good in the new direction and for the protection He provided by not having me continue on with my original plans. Only He knows where those actions may have led and the good I would have missed without following His lead.

As Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[a] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” This gift of hope calls us to continue to turn to Him with everything. He loves us.

Blessings to you!

Psalm 150

A Moment To Praise For Kids 6.8.21 in Scripture

Psalm 150:1-6 ESV | BibleGateway.com

Praise the Lord

Hallelujah!

Praise God in His sanctuary.

Praise Him in His mighty heavens.

Praise Him for His powerful acts;

praise Him for His abundant greatness.

Praise Him with trumpet blast;

praise Him with harp and lyre.

Praise Him with tambourine and dance;

praise Him with flute and strings.

Praise Him with resounding cymbals;

praise Him with clashing cymbals.

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.

biblegateway.com

Hallelujah!

I always thought that the word “Hallelujah” was a funny word to say and spell! So, I did a little research (@ learn religions.com)  into the word and here’s what I found.

Where does it say hallelujah in the Bible?

Hallelujah is found 24 times in the Old Testament, but only in the book of Psalms. It appears in 15 different Psalms, between 104-150, and in almost every case at the opening and/or closing of the Psalm. These passages are called the “Hallelujah Psalms.”

I thought that was so interesting.

Then I did a little more research and found this:

What is hallelujah in the Bible? Interpretation. In the Hebrew Bible hallelujah is actually a two-word phrase, not one word. … However, “hallelujah” means more than simply “praise Jah” or “praise Yah”, as the word hallel in Hebrew means a joyous praise in song, to boast in God. The second part, Yah, is a shortened form of YHWH, the name for the Creator.

So bottom line is that when we say Hallelujah we are actually expressing a joyous praise or song to boast and tell others all about God. Since this word only appears in the Psalms, that means David used it a lot. I really think David is so much like us. He makes so many mistakes and has so many trials (most of his own doing). Yet, he still finds time to not only worship God but sing hallelujah to Him. Praise Him on a whole different level of gratitude.

I hope that you can sing hallelujah and worship God today and in all days no matter what the circumstances are. Practice by daily lifting up a great big song of praise and join with the Psalms of old in worship!

A Moment To Praise 6.7.21

Joyce Lochinger

Joyce Lochinger, Gravel Hill Worship Leader

What’s your morning routine?

Get up and exercise? Walk, cycle, jog? Eat breakfast? Granola, cereal, egg whites, whole wheat toast?

Heart healthy stuff is on the menu at my house, or at least we are trying!

We want to take care of our physical health as much as possible. How’s it look at your house? I’m guessing many are the same.

Hmmmm, but are we missing something else for our hearts?

How about devotions, prayers, reading scripture? Sometimes, we don’t take our spiritual walk into account when we think of our overall health.

There is physical health, and yes,  God expects us to take care of the temple He has given us! He wants us to stay healthy so that we can do His good work on this earth. So that we can be around for our families and friends. Take care of our hearts. So that is so important.

A Moment To Praise 6.7.21 in Scripture

However, there is also spiritual health and I know that holds equal importance with God. How many of us forget this last part of a healthy heart lifestyle? God expects us to take care of our spiritual life. Here’s the evidence from scripture.

Colossians 3:12-14 ESV – BibleGateway.com

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

God wants us to go into this world with healthy and loving hearts. Hearts that are full of forgiveness and compassion for our neighbors and foes alike. The only way that we can truly have that happen in our lives is to keep our spiritual hearts healthy by being in God’s Word and studying the life and attitude of Jesus Christ.

Once we get into a habit of devotions, scripture reading and prayer, we can then grow and accomplish what God has planned for us to do in His name. He heals our hearts and molds us into His image as we become more practiced at pleasing His heart.

Move yourself physically and spiritually and see if you just don’t feel a little different about the day. And trust me, when you do this simple step in your physical and spiritual life, God’s heart which is full of mercy toward us, will be moved toward further compassion for you.

Peace

Thankful Thursday holds weather loaded with calm humidity and pregnant with anticipation of action to come today. This anticipation pause while wrapped with layers of dewiness calls for continuing the foundational routines of life while both reflecting on the adventures that have been taken and dreaming of opportunities yet to come. Approaching this activity with gratitude unlocks emotions of joy and happiness in your life.

As I write this, a peaceful calm envelops my soul. This moment of happiness hugs my heart. I appreciate the moments of foundation for my day. Their solid necessity and expectation free my creativity to wander and explore possibilities.

Lifting gratitude and praise, I rest my mind and body in this peaceful place. I rest in Him. John 14:27 speaks to this gift. The energy I need will come when needed and go to new opportunities that await.

I pray that you may find gratitude for where you are, make time to be with Jesus, and in doing so find the rest and energy you need in your day today.

Blessings to you!

“This is living, baby!”

Joyce Lochinger

Miss Joyce

I know a man who is very dear to my heart who would wake up every morning and say, “This is living baby!”. He would wait for my reaction, which was usually a grumble or an “ugh!” because who wants to hear that first thing in the morning.  But it wasn’t always said first thing in the morning.

He would also say this same line any time we were doing anything! Eating a great meal, he would say: “This is living, baby!” If we were having a fun time at an amusement park, he would inevitably say the same exact thing! If we were standing in a long line at the grocery, out the phrase would pop! “This is living, baby!”

When I was younger, I was like wow this guy can’t possibly be this joyous in all circumstances, and yet as the years have gone by, I came to realize that for the most part, he was. He refused to let the ho hum of everyday life get him down. As I look at this man with older eyes,  I see someone who has lived most of the 80+ years of his life with this philosophy, I realize he’s had it right all along!

The Backstory

Let me give you some back story, his life wasn’t easy as a child. He was abandoned by his mother at a young age.  Yup, left on the doorstep of a local farmer’s family. That family took him in because they needed extra hands on their farm and so he lived with them until after high school. He only knew his first and last name which was left with him on that doorstep, so he gave himself a middle name when he needed to sign any official document. He paid his on way through college with numerous jobs and excelled because he was happy to be living. And in the end put himself through college all the way through to a doctorate in education. Remember his motto! He was happy to have each day that was given to him.

I saved one thing for last to share – he deeply believed in God. He still does! And he still believes that each day, although it has more downs than ups for him at his age, is worth living.

A Moment To Praise For Kids 6.1.21 in Scripture

I know that his true strength and joy come from God and the spirit He planted in his heart from the beginning. I do believe he follows this scripture and that maybe it would be a good thing for us to as well.
