Walking in the Rain

Today, my daily outdoor stroll ended up being a walk in the rain! I certainly didn’t set out to have it work out that way, but nevertheless, that was what happened! As is usually the case when it rains, I was on my route at the furthest point away from my house. So, the only thing I could do was keep walking and get rained on! That’s exactly what I did.

Sometimes during my walks, a song will pop into my head that I will sing along to in my mind. It helps me to keep a nice, even step cadence during my walk! Naturally, on my walk today, “Grace like Rain” popped right into my thoughts.

Many times, when I am leading worship, I try to create a visual for the congregation. Sometimes, I’ll depict what the song might mean, or the feelings that the song might invoke. When we sing “Grace Like Rain”, I often try to express that God’s grace on us is like a rain shower falling down from the sky, covering us completely.

Until today, I hadn’t necessarily made the physical connection between His grace and a drenching summer rain shower. In my case, after walking through the downpour for a while, I was absolutely dripping wet with rain. I’m not just talking about my outer clothing being wet. No, I was drenched to my core, or as my mom used to say, “soaked to the bone”! Everything on me and every part of me was completely saturated with water!

Grace Like Rain

I began to think of this rain as God’s physical grace on me. There was nowhere on my body that remained dry. The rain had literally absorbed through my very skin. It completely and thoroughly covered me, inside and out!

It is such a wonderful feeling to know that God provides grace to us in that way. There is no area of our life that is not touched by the grace of God. There is no past that His grace cannot overcome.  No sin that His power and love cannot forgive. Best of all, He showers it down on us freely, just like He allows rain to fall down on us in nature.

What have you and I done to earn this? Nothing! We have done absolutely nothing. What do we need to do to benefit from it? We must accept it! That’s all we must do.

So, the next time you’re walking the road of life and you are at the farthest point from your home, feeling like there is nothing else you can possibly do, accept that rain shower of grace that the Lord wants to send your way. Let it soak you to your very soul! Then, live into the abundant life that He wants to offer you!
