The Power of Listening

Thankful Thursday has heard several conversation around the topics of our voice and our listening. Each aspect has important value in our lives. Being able to express our thoughts and ideas (voice) and exercising our listening muscles and our brains to hear the thoughts, ideas, and perspectives from another (listening).

I used to meet with students who voluntarily met with me over their lunch time. Each day we gathered together, the students would listen to the question of the day. Then, one at a time, every person at the gathering would share their answer to the question. There was a simple beauty and powerful connection in this gathering and sharing of thoughts. Often responses would generate lively discussion or reminiscing (especially the question: What was your favorite childhood toy?)

When thinking about this sharing and listening aspect when applied to my relationship with Christ, I realize I spend a lot more time lending my voice to share my thoughts and ideas with Him. But I need to exercise my listening muscles a whole lot more as He hears from me way more than I make time to listen to Him. One way to up that ratio of listening time is getting into the scriptures more. The fun side of technology is that we can push a button and listen to someone read the Bible to us (just like the first believers learned!) I especially appreciate this tool for all the names that I struggle to pronounce! It takes the focus off getting the words right and keeps it on gleaning the message Christ wants me to hear.

The spending time together sharing and listening opens the door for deeper relationship, broader perspective, and greater connection that a lead to a more fulfilling life. I’m so thankful for Christ’s patience and persist presence as He listens to me and waits for me to hear from Him too. What an amazing gift! Thank you Lord!
