Community Day is an event with two purposes.  The first purpose is to provide Palmyra and surrounding communities with a fun, family-oriented event that is free to everyone who attends.  Free food.  Free balloons, Free games.  Free music.  Free everything.  It is an opportunity for fellowship and laughter and making memories.

The other purpose of Community Day (and the Charity Motorcycle Ride) is to raise money through good will donations to help a selected local family who is in need financially due to unforeseen medical issues. Over the past four years, we have raised nearly $9000 for families in and around our area. Like last year, we will donate all the money raised from Community Day and our Charity Motorcycle Ride to a local need through our LEHNding Hands Fund. This year's primary recipient will be Katye's Helping Hands.

Katye's Helping Hands (KHH) is a Non-Profit Organization that aims at helping children of any law enforcement officer and fire fighters lost in the line of duty. KHH does this by building teddy bears for children under the age of 15 and mailing them directly to the fallen officer's children. If the children are 15 through college, Katye then makes tie-dye blankets for each surviving child. Katye also recognizes the unborn children by sending a blanket and giraffe to the surviving widow.

KHH was a vision of a young lady named Katye. Katye had watched and assisted as her parents lent support to Trooper Joshua D. Miller - a Pennsylvania State Trooper whom heroically gave his life, June 7, 2009 while saving the life of a child. Katye saw through this experience that there was no direct OFFICER'S kid to OFFICER'S kid support. Hence, KHH became her mission. Following a weekend experience at the National American Miss Pennsylvania Pageant, Katye learned that girls do dream and those dreams can come true. Today, with the support of her corporate sponsors and many wonderful adult mentors, Katyes dream is reality. Katye lives her new Pageants Motto, that "girls can achieve great things" as she is the 2010-11 Miss Pennsylvania Teenager (American Dream).

LEHNding Hands is not a true "fund" but instead it is a way to honor a very courageous woman from our church, Kim Lehn, who passed away in the summer of 2012 after a 15 year battle with cancer. Kim's strength, courage, and perseverance were and still are today an inspiration to so many of her friends and family.

Kim was born to Karl R. and Deanna Smith on September 13, 1962 in the Good Samaritan Hospital.  Kim started to attend Gravel Hill UMC when she was 10 years old.  Her Sunday School teacher was Don Wetzel.  Kim was very active in Youth Fellowship.  While attending Palmyra High School, Kim worked at the Palmyra Nursing Home delivering meals and socializing with the residents.  Kim was very close to her family.  She was especially close to her Grandma Smith as she lived with Kim's parents for 17 years.  Kim learned to bake and cook from her grandma; something Kim enjoyed doing late in life.

When she grew up, Kim married Bryon Lehn in the church Chapel on May 26, 1984.  Reverend Kenneth Buckwalter married the couple.  Kim and Bryon had two children, Zakari and Maggi.  Kim became a beautician and worked in a shop in Annville beginning in 1988.  She eventually had a partnership shop in Palmyra. In later years, also Kim helped out as a beautician for the Brethren Home in Palmyra while continuing her partnership shop in town.  Kim loved her job.  She always enjoyed her clients and never hesitated to lend an ear to listen to the things they had to say or wished to share.  She especially loved her time at the Brethren Home helping the elderly and simply being someone they could talk to.

In 2005, Kim was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.  Doctors also discovered she had kidney issues, which they treated by inserting stents for a period of time.  Kim began chemo treatments for the cancer, but because it was metastatic in nature, the cancer slowly spread to other areas of her body.  It spread to her eye, which caused her to need radiation treatments.  Once the radiation treatments were over, she was back to chemo, including the chemo pill.  Despite going through all of this, Kim still managed to take care of her family and rarely missed a day of work.  However, when the weekend came, she was nearly exhausted and need a lot of rest before beginning the next week.  Kim also took the time to put out a "cancer update" so that many of her friends and family could be informed of her condition.

Kim continued to work until the end of 2011, all the while still wanting to help and care for others even in her worsening situation.  She continued chemo treatments until she was informed that they were no longer being effective.  She was then told that there were no other options available to treat her.  Kim passed from this world and went to be with the Lord on June 30, 2012.  To the people whose lives Kim touched and to the members of Gravel Hill and the Annville and Palmyra communities who knew Kim, her life stands as a testament to the overwhelming power of courage, self-sacrifice, love, and kindness one person can exude even in the face of terrible circumstances.
